Cholatse peak is also called with another name as JoboLhaptshan and Arkam Tse. Those who have descended towards Gokyo from Renjo La or have climbed up Gokyo Ri will remember the view towards Cholatse on the opposite side of the valley connected to peak Taboche (6,501m/20,177ft) by a long ridge. Its stunning laid- back-looking peak is composed of steep faces and narrow snow and ice ridges. Unlike many of the trekking peaks, all routes to this summit involve sustained technical difficulty and for this reason, Cholatse has attached many of the world’s best mountaineers to attempt new, highly challenging routes. Cholatse Peak was climbed in 1982 for the first time and the first solo climbing was accomplished by UeliSteck through the north face in April 2005. On April 22nd Vern Clevenger, Galen Rowell, John Roskelley, and Bill O’Connor reached the summit via the Southwest Ridge. The South West Ridge is perhaps the easiest route on the peak and it was only repeated in 1993, again in 2005, and rarely since then. The Southeast Ridge was first climbed in the same year. The North-East Face was successfully scaled in 1984 and the first solo ascent was accomplished on April 15, 2005, by Ueli Steck. Remarkably he reached the summit via a direct line in a 37-hour push from base camp with a single night’s bivouac on the face. Cholatse can be seen all the way to the Everest Bese Camp as a particular peak in Khumbu valley but was the unclimbed peak until 1982. Comparatively Cholatse peak climbing is harder than other Nepal Mountaineering Peak. Required climbing technical knowledge to climb Cholatse Peak.
Similar to Sherpa language, In the Tibetan language ‘ Cho’ means “lake”, ‘La’ means “pass” and ‘Tse’ means “peak”. Literally, Cho-La-Tse means “Lake Pass Peak” as Tholatse peak is on another side of Gokyo Lake. Nevertheless, the steep falls narrow icy, and snowy ridges with southeast face glacier is a stunning view of Mt. Cholatse. This towering peak claimed a major part of the Khumbu valley and its attraction.
Mt. Cholatse Caravan route starts flying from Kathmandu to Lukla and all the way trekking to Gokyolake, Climb Gokyo Ri for acclimatization and continue trekking to Cholatse Base camp, Summit the peak and returning from Phortse all the way down to Namche, Lukla then fly back to Kathmandu by a scheduled flight.
