OVERVIEW

Mt.Kanchanjunga:

Mount Kanchenjunga Main is a majestic peak located in the Kangchenjunga mountain range in the Himalayas. With an elevation of 8,586 meters or 28,169 feet, it is the third highest mountain in the world, after Mount Everest and K2. It is situated on the border of Phaktanglung and Sirijanga rural municipality in Taplejung district of Nepal and India.

Kangchenjunga was first discovered by Westerners in 1848, and until 1852, it was believed to be the highest mountain in the world. However, after measurements and readings were taken by the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India in 1849, it was officially announced in 1856 that Kangchenjunga was the third highest mountain in the world.

The Kangchenjunga mountain range is located in the eastern part of Nepal, and its name means “The Five Treasures of Snow”. This name comes from the fact that there are five peaks in the range that are over 8,000 meters high. Mount Kanchenjunga Main is the highest peak in this range, and it is located on the border of Nepal and India.

The first successful climb to the summit of Mount Kanchenjunga Main was achieved on May 25, 1955 by Joe Brown and George Band, who were part of a British expedition. They stopped short of the summit in accordance with the promise given to the Chogyal that the top of the mountain would remain intact. This tradition has been followed by every climber or climbing group that has reached the summit since then.

Climbing Mount Kanchenjunga Main is a challenging and technical climb, and it requires a high level of skill, experience, and physical fitness. The climbing period usually lasts for around 50 days, and it includes a number of acclimatization periods, rest days, and summit pushes.

The climbing route to the summit of Mount Kanchenjunga Main starts from the village of Taplejung in Nepal. The trek to the base camp takes around 10-12 days, and it passes through beautiful landscapes, traditional villages, and remote valleys. The base camp is located at an altitude of 5,180 meters or 16,995 feet, and it provides a stunning view of the mountain range.

From the base camp, the climbing route follows the north face of the mountain. The route includes steep ice and snow climbs, mixed terrain, and technical rock sections. The climbers need to be equipped with proper gear and equipment, including ice axes, crampons, ropes, and harnesses.

The climbing route is divided into several camps, and each camp provides a higher altitude and a closer view of the summit. The first camp is located at an altitude of 6,000 meters or 19,685 feet, the second camp is at 6,800 meters or 22,310 feet, and the third camp is at 7,500 meters or 24,606 feet.

After the third camp, the climbers reach the summit push stage, which usually lasts for around 2-3 days. The summit push involves climbing through challenging terrain and extreme weather conditions, including high winds, low temperatures, and snowstorms. The summit of Mount Kanchenjunga Main offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountain range and valleys.

Due to its challenging nature and technical difficulty, climbing Mount Kanchenjunga Main is not as popular as climbing Mount Everest or other peaks in the Himalayas. However, for those who are up to the challenge, it offers a unique and rewarding climbing experience.

In addition to the physical challenges, climbers also need to be prepared for the cultural and environmental aspects of climbing in the region. The Kangchenjunga Conservation Area, which is managed by the Nepalese government, is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, including snow leopards, red pandas, and musk deer. Climbers are required to obtain a permit to enter the conservation area, and they must follow strict guidelines to minimize their impact on the environment.

The local communities in the region are also an important aspect of climbing Mount Kanchenjunga Main. The Taplejung district is home to several ethnic groups, including the Limbu and Sherpa people, who have their own unique cultural traditions and practices. Many climbers choose to hire local guides and porters, who not only provide valuable support during the climb but also offer insights into the local culture and way of life.

Despite its challenges, climbing Mount Kanchenjunga Main remains a popular and sought-after experience for climbers from around the world. The mountain’s majestic beauty, rich cultural and environmental heritage, and technical difficulty all contribute to its allure. For those who are up to the challenge, the climb to the summit of Mount Kanchenjunga Main is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will stay with them forever.
